By Bruce Wolfe, HANC President

At February’s membership meeting, we were graced with Nick Pasquariello’s beautiful video documentary on the Parkmerced apartment complex and community. He gave a wide ranging overview of the environs with an exquisite history and examples of the varying lifestyles given by various residents and advocates.

 Tenancies at Risk

The point of the documentary was to highlight the plight of Parkmerced’s gorgeous townhouses and garden apartments slated for demolition to make way for replacement development of highrise buildings that certainly will not retain the tenancies under rent control. Maneuvers are underway by the new owners, Parkmerced Investors Properties, a group led by New York real estate investor Robert Rosania, and including Mark Karasick, managing partner of 601w, a New York real estate investment and development firm, San Francisco’s Fortress and Boston’s Rockport Group (see https://goo.gl/rwSXyP).

The new ownership group has managed to affect and intimidate current renters into eviction and even moving out altogether unable to find reasonable, similar rents here in the City. The plight of Parkmerced’s recent history is a canary in the coal mine, a harbinger, of what we currently are experiencing now citywide along with the unacceptable decisionmaking and corporate protectionism of the Mayor, according to the reports in the film and by Nick himself as explained to the viewing HANC membership during his presentation.
