By Christian Vaisse, HANC Board

HANC's monthly (except August) general membership meeting is held downstairs at the Park Branch Library, 1833 Page Street (between Cole and Shrader) on the second Thursday of the month, beginning at 7 pm.  Our meetinngs are open to the public and free to attend.

Universal access to health care is considered one of the most basic human rights and is a reality in all developed countries. Yet, in the United States its recent and imperfect implementation [ACA, also known as Obamacare] was only possible with bending over backwards to accommodate potent lobbies and financial interests.

The result was a compromise, that still benefits a number of intermediates who bring nothing to, and often hinder, the efficient and empathetic cure of patients. It also imposes a significantly increased financial burden on some currently healthy individuals.  While this calls for rational adjustments, simplifications and additional investments, it is impossible to ignore that even the notion of this basic right is currently and repeatedly under attack by congress and the Executive Branch.

Could these threats be opportunities for California and San Francisco? Did you know for example that, prior to the Affordable Care Act, universal health care already existed in San Francisco as Healthy San Francisco? Indeed, Healthy San Francisco still serves 14,000 San Franciscans who cannot benefit from the ACA. Did you also know that SB 562, a bill currently being discussed in the California legislature, and officially supported by HANC, is aimed at implementing single payer universal health care in California?

The theme of HANC’s next meeting, on May 11th, 7PM at the Park Branch Library will be “Healthcare at a crossroad: The issues, the options, the impact”. Please join us as experts and activists will discuss the past, present, and future of healthcare in San Francisco and California and the impact we can have in driving positive changes.
