Shakirah Simley, Legislative Aide to Supervisor Vallie Brown, said that future legislation will address people living in cars, as “everyone deserves to be inside.” The supervisor is also working on issues of equity in the city, including discrimination complaints by African American city employees. Another priority for Supervisor Brown is a Youth Navigation Center in District 5, though it will not be located at the former McDonald's site.
Tired of seeing sound housing demolished for monster homes, etc.? Supervisor Peskin is drafting legislation to address this. Legislative Aide Lee Hepner told us that we are losing an average of one rent-restricted housing unit for every two built over the past ten years, per the Housing Balance Report – a disaster! Clear City rules about what is and isn't legal to demolish can help, and may also protect us from state rezoning legislation.
Xian Yun Plans
Dr. Sherry Zhang, Principal of the Xian Yun Academy of the Arts, presented plans to add a third story of classrooms and teacher housing. There was a lively discussion and HANC hopes to obtain more information about the school's plans.
