HANC Turns Sixty:  HANC’s first meeting was on October 15, 1959, at the Dudley Stone School (now the Chinese Immersion School) on Haight Street.  Roger Hulbert, HANC’s temporary chairman and news editor of the Haight-Cole Journal, spoke on “Citizen Action—A Haight-Ashbury Tradition.”  HANC is planning a celebration.  More details will be available as the date approaches.

Update on 730 Stanyan (former McDonald’s Site):  HANC can only report that the Coalition for a Complete Community is awaiting the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development to announce its selection of an interim use for the site.  HANC continues to participate in the Coalition for a Complete Community and encourages MOHCD to select the CCC proposal as the best interim use for the site.

Panhandle Playground:  The Panhandle Playground closed on April 8.  There was a groundbreaking ceremony on April 25.  Construction is estimated to last through the end of the year, and maybe into early 2020.

SB50 Moves Forward:  Senate Bill 50, which bypasses local control and provides extra height and density for residential developments near transit and jobs, is moving through the State Senate.  It was passed by the Senate Housing Committee on April 2 and by the Senate Governance and Finance Committee on April 24.  The committee considered a competing bill, SB4, but merged the two bills.  The provisions of SB4 would apply to counties with populations under 600,000, while the provisions of SB50 would apply to counties with greater population.  We will continue to follow and report on this proposed legislation.  Text, history, analysis, and more can be found at https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB50 .
