Installation of Additional Bike Share Station
An SFMTA map dated January 1, 2022 (but showing installations from June 2017 through July 2022) shows 8 BikeShare stations installed in the Haight Ashbury: Fell at Stanyan (19 bikes), Waller at Stanyan (17 bikes), Carl at Cole (23 bikes), Page at Masonic (31 bikes), Haight at Lyon (27 bikes), Broderick at Oak (27 bikes), Central at Fell (31 bikes), and Grove at Masonic (31 bikes). There are additional stations nearby at Frederick and Arguello (19 bikes), McAllister at Arguello (19 bikes), Parker at McAllister (27 bikes), McAllister at Baker (27 bikes) and Grove at Divisadero (27 bikes). The map can be found at Bike Share Installation Map.
At an SFMTA Engineering Public Hearing on May 19, 2023 (https://www.sfmta.com/notices/engineering-public-hearing-meeting-may-19-2023), agenda item 6 had this description, “Proposal to install a Bay Wheels bike share station in the parking lane on the south side of Page Street, east of Cole Street, adjacent to 500-506 Cole Street. This is an alternative to the previous Belvedere Street at Haight Street proposal.” The result (which can be downloaded from the same website) was that the decision is “On hold for further outreach at this location and to investigate further potential locations.”
There has been subsequent communication between the Haight Ashbury Resident Taskforce, a group of neighbors, many on Page Street, and Adrian Leung on behalf of the SFMTA bike share program. The concerns of the task force and MTA’ response can be downloaded here: https://www.hanc-sf.org/the-voice-and-docs/general-reference/Page-Bike-Share-Exchange-May-2023/.
I was not able to determine from the SFMTA website when the next hearing is scheduled, but a call to 3-1-1 indicated that it will be on September 2 at 10 am.
Bike Lanes
On August 20, 2020, the SFMTA Board of Directors approved a “temporary parking-protected bikeway on Fell Street between Baker and Shrader Street.” At its June 20, 2023 meeting, the SFMTA Board of Directors determined that “Evaluation of the temporary improvements has found that they were successful in achieving their goals with minimal impacts to vehicle travel times on Fell Street,” and approved “a permanent parking-protected bikeway on Fell Street between Baker Street and Shrader Street.”
There are plans for a similar bike lane on Oak Street, but it is in the early stages—design work is on hold during the Oak Street sewer replacement project (see below)
No Parking on Oak
You may have already seen the signs on both sides of Oak Street, from Cole to Ashbury: “No Stopping 06/05/23 – 12/30/23 9AM – 6PM Mon-Fri.” There have also been lane closures along Oak Street and various warning signs. And, there is 24-hour, seven day no parking on the east side of Clayton near Oak Street for equipment storage.
The San Francisco Department of Public Works has a map of projects at this website: https://sanfrancisco-public.dotmapsapp.com/map. The map indicates that this is a large sewer rehabilitation project, with a start date of March 7, 2023, and an end date of March 8, 2024. It looks like loss of parking spaces and delays on Oak Street will last a long time.
