You may have noticed that some trees have been removed from Haight Street, and other trees are surrounded by wood and plastic. We contacted the Department of Public Works with our questions, and here’s what we were told:
38 trees are scheduled to be removed from Haight Street, and 44 trees will be planted as part of the “Haight Street Transit Improvement & Public Realm Project.”
A list (as of 2016) of the trees to be removed, and a map (as of June 2019) of the existing trees that will remain and the new trees to be planted can be downloaded from our website at https://www.hanc-sf.org/the-voice-and-docs/Haight-Street-Trees/. There will also be planter boxes added at the corners where the sidewalk is being extended.
No Exact Timeline
A few of the smaller trees were removed in June, and removals will continue in July. DPW does not have an exact timeline as to when the larger trees will be removed, as this will require coordination with MUNI.
New trees are typically planted toward the end of a project. The project began at the beginning of June and is expected to last two years. The trees being removed are being replaced with Brisbane Box trees. After the new trees are planted, they will have decomposed granite installed flush with the sidewalk.
